Change Who Can Believe In?

February 2nd, 2010 Watcher No comments

Yes, I voted for Obama.  Yes, I believed that change was coming to Washington.  Yes, I was a fool.

I’m a 71-year-old straight woman who thinks that the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell military policy has been a 17-year-old abomination.  Obama campaigned on repealing it in his first year in office.  He didn’t.  In his State of the Union address, he promised to repeal it in his second year in office.  He won’t.  Not when he can send his military brass up to Capitol Hill to suggest that it has to be studied for yet another year.  What’s to study?  Do we really need to study the homophobes in the military for another year to figure out that the reason they’re homophobes is because they are in doubt about their own sexuality?  I don’t think so.

We’re losing too many valuable people when our military is already stretched to the breaking point.  The nonsense has to stop.  Congress can take care of it on its own.  For the sake of what’s right, let’s hope they do.  For the sake of what’s just, let’s hope they have more balls than Obama.

Gays and Guns — what do these two have in common?

October 8th, 2009 Watcher No comments

On the surface, one might wonder what these two have in common, right?  But dig a little deeper, and it all becomes clear.

As the issue of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” reemerges on the political scene, and you watch closely and listen carefully to the opponents of repeal, the thing that hits you is that they are mostly men who have probable cause to question their own sexual orientation.  Take Louie Gohmert from Texas, for a prime example.  My late husband always said: “Show me a man who’s scared of gays, and I’ll show you a man who’s scared to look in the mirror.”  A normal, sexually healthy man couldn’t care less how anyone else lives his life.

Now, let’s look at guns.  And this sudden, panicked urge to buy up all the guns and ammunition in the country.  From old and impotent Dick Cheney, who has to shoot sitting pheasants to feel like a man, to immature skinheads whose “superiority” isn’t even skin deep, the story is the same: a man who needs a gun is a man who needs a substitute for a penis that doesn’t work very well.  And a woman who needs a gun is a woman who’s making a pathetic attempt to compensate for not having a penis.  A normal, sexually healthy person couldn’t care less about guns.

Let’s see. . .gays and guns. . . sexuality and performance. . .and you thought the two weren’t related!
